I spent the better part of the day, afternoon mostly, with my friend Paweł and his partner Lukasz. We met near the castle in the Old Town and went over the the New Town to a much frequented cafe (by us anyway) for something to eat. The Old (and New) Town was packed with tourists. On the way there, I bought a couple of rolls of film (yes film) for my camera - as apparently it's going to be unavailable shortly as they're (the powers that be) planning on getting rid of it entirely.

After eating we walked down to Krakowskie Przedmiescie and to one my fave pubs, which Alex introduced me to, in one of the yards off Nowy Świat near what's called Pewex. I wonder if there was a Pewex there at some point...

So we stayed and drank some beer and I had a Cosmopolitan and chatted and laughed about rude things and silly things and it was a lot of fun.

Oh, I nearly forgot, on the way to the bar, we passed a huge 'Country' Fair on Nowy Świat (which was closed to traffic). It was packed with wonderful fare including sausages and country bread - I think Polish bread (especially Country Bread) is the best in the world. Anyway, as the skies decided burst the moment we got to that fare, we decided to hide in a walkway then head to the aforementioned Pub and return to the fare later. When we did return we got Cheese and Bread and Sausage. All bought from people who were happy to sell their produce to us, with smiles and free samples. It was lovely. Also some Folk music band played on the stage, to the wonder and pleasure of many MANY passers-by. The place was so packed with happy tourists and Poles alike. It was really what I think could be here. I real community feeling. The whole world in one moment. I also bought myself a new, hand made, red glaze and brown clay coffee cup from a woman there. She has a workshop where she also teaches here in W-wa. Maybe... maybe.

Then we walked up Świętokrzyska to the Metro for Paweł and Lukasz and the bus for me. We had a quick coffee at Coffee Heaven there and then parted. I hope we get to see eachother again soon. I miss company that 'understands' me in W-wa. The kind of understanding you only get with people who've been through stuff with you and know you well.

Ah life!

At 13:00 today, the Sirens wailed as I stood just inside the gate of my students block at Plac Wilsona.

They wailed as today marks the 65th Anniversary of the start of the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising.

I went to the memorial near the Jewish Cemetary and left a candle.

I actually live in what was part of the Ghetto... At the end of Dzielna, near Okopowa.

It's a strange feeling living here in the midst of all this death and destruction.

Koncert „Solidarni z Białorusią"

W niedzielę, 30. marca, o godzinie 18.00 na Placu Zamkowym w Warszawie odbędzie się koncert „Solidarni z Białorusią”.

Główną część imprezy widzowie będą mogli obejrzeć na żywo w TVP INFO. Retransmisja koncertu w TVP 2.

Warszawski koncert organizowany jest już po raz trzeci – w tym roku przez Telewizję Polską, Miasto Stołeczne Warszawa oraz stowarzyszenie Inicjatywa Wolna Białoruś. Przedsięwzięcie ma na celu wsparcie opozycji w mobilizacji Białorusinów walczących o demokratyzację swojego kraju.

Na termin koncertu celowo wybrano koniec marca, ponieważ 25 marca białoruska opozycja obchodzi zdelegalizowane przez władze święto niepodległości. W zeszłym roku podczas koncertu swoje poparcie dla demokratycznych zmian na Białorusi zademonstrowało kilkanaście tysięcy osób.

Akcję co roku wspierają wybitni polscy artyści. W poprzednich latach na scenie mogliśmy zobaczyć m.in. Andrzeja Wajdę, Muńka Staszczyka, Kasię Nosowską. Podczas tegorocznego koncertu znów wystąpią gwiazdy polskiej muzyki, m.in. Justyna Steczkowska, Stanisław Soyka , Aga Zaryan, Tomek Makowiecki czy Kuba Kawalec z zespołu Happysad. Na scenie pojawią się także inni znani polscy muzycy, aktorzy oraz ludzie kultury, którzy swoją obecnością chcą podkreślić solidarność z Białorusinami. Udział w koncercie wezmą również zespoły białoruskie. Głównym celem tegorocznego koncertu jest propagowanie języka białoruskiego, dlatego wiele utworów śpiewanych będzie po białorusku. Podczas imprezy prowadzona będzie zbiórka funduszy na rzecz zdelegalizowanego przez władze liceum im. Jakuba Kołasa z Mińska. To ostatnia szkoła średnia na Białorusi, w której lekcje prowadzone są po białorusku.

TVP INFO od godz. 20:30 do 21:30. Koncert będzie transmitowany również na teren Białorusi, za pośrednictwem telewizji Belsat oraz Europejskiego Radia dla Białorusi i radia Racja. Retransmisja koncertu w TVP 2 w godz. 00.15 -01.15.

Today at 1pm, outside the Chinese Embassy in Warsaw - Bonifraterska 1 - there will be a Peaceful Protest against these actions and the ongoing repression of the Tibetan people and the Chinese occupation of Tibet.

PLEASE COME! You will see a map just above. It's easy to get to, close to the Old Town.

Again, this is peaceful, because violence is what the Chinese Government uses.
